Rajiv Gandhi set the ball rolling for Ayodhya Temple

New Delhi: With the Supreme Court washing its hands off the Babri Masjid – Ram temple tug of war in Ayodhya history in a way has come full circle.

The story of this controversy will probably go down in the annals of Indian history as the turning point which changed the destiny of the whole sub continent – almost tragically.

How the brave and modern path chartered for the newly independent country by its first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru who abhorred the mixing of Religion and Politics and told his country men that “dams, bridges and factories are the temples of modern India” was sabotaged by none other than his grandson Rajiv Gandhi when he became P.M. after his mother’s assassination.

The beans have been spilled by none other than our current President Pranav Mukherjee in his memoirs called ‘The Turbulent years – 1980 to 1986’.

He recounts how Rajiv Gandhi won the general elections with a land slide victory immediately after Indira Gandhi’s death due to the polarization that took place after her assassination at the hands of a Sikh bodyguard.

Muslim Man Lynched to Death in Central India for ‘Slaughtering Cow’

A Muslim man has been beaten to death by an angry mob of villagers in India for allegedly killing a bovine – an act considered a crime and punishable by imprisonment under local laws.
The gruesome incident took place in Amgara village in the “Heart of India” – central Madhya Pradesh state – on Thursday night, local media report. The villagers allegedly noticed two men, later identified in reports as Riyaz Khan and Shakeel Maqbool, with the animal near a quarry.

Conflicting reports say it was either a cow or a bull, but the killing of either is considered a criminal offence under state laws. Madhya Pradesh prohibits the slaughter of cows, calves, bulls, bullocks and buffalo calves. However, the locals apparently decided to take the matters into their own hands.

“The villagers saw them [Khan and Maqbool] slaughtering bulls. They got angry and attacked them,” local police official Rajendra Pathak said, as cited by the Indian Express.

Both men were brutally lynched by the villagers, with 45-year-old Riyaz later succumbing to his injuries. Maqbool was taken to hospital in a critical condition. Police who arrived at the scene found slaughtered cattle and the meat of two other animals packed in bags, senior police officer Rajesh Hingankar said, as cited by NDTV.

At least four men were arrested following the lynching. In a separate case, the authorities also filed a complaint against Khan and Maqbool, accusing them of cattle slaughter, which is a punishable offence in a number of Indian states, including Madhya Pradesh. The state has recently increased the jail term for cow slaughter to seven years and a fine of Rs. 5,000 ($73).

“On the basis of the FIR [first information report] lodged by the villager, Shakeel [Maqbool] will be arrested after he is discharged from the hospital,” Hingankar added. Maqbool has reportedly denied all charges against him.

India has recently seen a rise in so-called ‘cow vigilantes,’ who attack farmers and violently prevent cattle from being slaughtered. In summer 2017, a Muslim teen was allegedly stabbed to death for carrying beef. In a separate incident, a farmer who was transporting cows was killed on a road trip.

In 2017, Human Rights Watch (HRW) called upon the Indian authorities to prosecute ‘cow vigilantes,’ arguing that Muslims are often targets of attacks, along with members of India’s lowest caste.

Cows are considered sacred by Hindus, who make up almost 80 percent of India's population. Muslims account for 14 percent of the population, according to 2011 census data.

Miscreants Leave Burning Cylinder Outside Mosque in Rajasthan

UDAIPUR: A day before the commencement of the holy month of Ramadan, some miscreants tried to create a commotion outside a mosque at the Chetak Circle in the wee hours of Wednesday.
Few men, who came in a car, fled after abandoning a burning gas cylinder outside the masjid gate. Luckily, the Bohra community people who had risen for ‘Sehri’ witnessed the incident and immediately reported to police. The fire fighters arrived in time and thus an explosion was averted.

The incident is quite shocking as the mosque is situated on one of the busiest streets in the heart of the city, with the police station located just around 100 meters away. There were a few cars parked on the road sides and eyewitnesses said if the cylinder had exploded, the flames would have spread in a larger area and caused great damage.

Six BJP workers arrested for planting ISIS flags in Assam

In a sensational development, police in Assam have arrested six BJP workers in connection with the discovery of an ISIS flag in the state’s Nalbari district.
The arrested BJP members have been identified as Tapan Barman from Kaihati, Mojamil Ali from Chamata, Moon Ali from Baruakur, Pulak Barman from Belsor, Dwipjyoti Thakuria, Sorojjyoti Baishya and Khelua Patowary.

The cops arrested them on Monday from Piplibari for their alleged role in the incident, reported website NENow.

Cops had swung into action after local in Kaihati area of Belsor Police Station had discovered an ISIS flag tied to a treat with the message urging people to join the dreaded terrorist outfit.

What’s noticeable in the flag posted by the BJP members is the Arabic texts, which different to what appears on the ISIS flags. The second part of the text, Muhammadur Rasuloollah, has been written wrongly.

The NENow website further reported that similar flags with ‘ISIS NE’ written on them were discovered in Goalpara district on a river bank. Cops had suspected that this could have been the handiwork of miscreants, who were keen to create communal tension in the area.

Curiously, the flags were found days ahead of the visit of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, to the state.

Football dreams battle Israeli bullets

Muhammad Khalil Obeid is refusing to abandon his dream of becoming a professional football player.

After being shot in both knees by an Israeli sniper on 30 March, Obeid requires major surgery to have any chance of resuming his beloved game. Doctors have told the 23-year-old he would need to travel from Gaza to Germany or Turkey for that surgery.

Overcoming initial despair and determined that the operation take place, he has decided to search for a charity that will pay his costs.

“I dream of playing in Europe, I will not kill my dream,” he said. “And I will not let the Israeli occupation kill my dream.”

Obeid had been part of al-Salah club in Gaza since he was 17. As well as being a talented football player, he finished first in a Gaza marathon that he ran last year.

He is one of 27 competitive athletes injured during the Great March of Return between late March – when the protests began – and late April, according to Gaza’s youth and sports ministry.

A video which Obeid made capturing the moment he was shot during the protests has been widely viewed on the Internet. Obeid was accompanied by several other sports enthusiasts from the Deir al-Balah area of central Gaza at the time he was shot.

Life-changing injuries
A recent investigation by Amnesty International concluded that Israel may be deliberately causing life-changing injuries to people such as Obeid, who have taken part in the Gaza protests.

Amnesty has also cited evidence that Israel is using high-velocity rifles and bullets that expand on impact to cause maximum harm against protesters. Many of the weapons used by Israel against protesters are US-made.

Ata Ahmed Abu al-Hossna was shot by Israeli forces on Friday, 6 April – one week after Obeid.

The 27-year-old spent much of that day at a protest tent near Jabaliya, northern Gaza. When he saw youth burning tires – an effort to thwart Israel’s detection of targets for sniper fire – Abu al-Hossna decided that he should join them. Shortly afterwards, Israel began shooting live ammunition in the direction of demonstrators.

As he tried to flee for safety, Abu al-Hossna was shot in the left leg. “I do not remember what happened after that,” he said.
